Elephant Shoe Films approached O Street to design a contemporary title sequence for BBC Scotland’s poetry special, Beyond Burns.
Beyond Burns is a BBC Scotland Burns Night broadcast which aims to delve deeper into Scottish literary history than just Rabbie himself, shining a light on poets that have remained in Burn’s shadow.
Our brief was to design a contemporary title sequence that was authentically Scottish, without being twee (a specialty of ours). We rooted the titles in the landscape of Scotland, drawing parallels between mountain ranges and torn paper, and using collaged page-turn transitions to echo the literary narrative.
Drawing inspiration from 60s and 70s Penguin book covers, we wanted the titles to capture the tactility of paper and books whilst remaining colourful and modern.
The result is a television title sequence with a difference. One that evokes a sense of Scots culture without resorting to tartan or bagpipes.
“It’s always a pleasure to work with Neil and the team at O Street. Their ideas are fresh and their creative talent and artistry knows no bounds. They are collaborative, enthusiastic, supportive and patient and produce stylish, bespoke, work that really stands out whilst complimenting any documentary style. We always feel that they are genuinely interested and passionate about the work and we can’t recommend them highly enough.”
